Explanation of the differences between current transformers and current sensors

Dec 29, 2023|

1. Many times, transformers are used to measure AC, because the output is relatively large, basically current, and the measurement range is also very wide. However, in practical applications, if you directly use an AC MCU, it cannot be collected. Because the output current is too large, even if there is a conversion resistor, the peak value of the output voltage is very large, which will pose a threat to the MCU, such as a 3.3V microcontroller. , DSP, etc., once there is no protective follower on the front end, it cannot be used. The high potential of the peak may even damage the MCU.
But for relay-type action components, using transformers has obvious advantages. This is because the output of the transformer is large and the driving capacity is also large. It is easy to simplify the circuit. If a sensor is used, a microcontroller will be used to control the relay. To work, it even needs to be controlled by a CPU outside.

Because the sensor has some properties of its own, it will form a loop with the power supply and output a low-power voltage and current signal with high accuracy. Since it is in a loop with the power supply, it will be much smaller than the power supply voltage. In actual use, there is basically no need to consider the damage to the circuit caused by the high potential of the peak.

It can be determined that the output power of the transformer is large and there is a phase difference; the sensor output is micro-electricity, so there is no phase difference.

2. The structure of the transformer is very simple. The core and coil are completely isolated, and the isolation level is often relatively high. However, due to its working principle, phase differences will occur during use. The phase difference is usually marked in the product instruction manual. Degree, so that MCU acquisition can be used for phase compensation in actual use.
What the sensor needs is a signal amplified by chip induction. It can be said that the two signals are basically synchronized. Its response time is very fast. It is generally not marked in the product manual and is basically not needed during use. Phase compensation.

It can be seen from this that both current transformers and current sensors have their own advantages and disadvantages. In different occasions and different applications, there are only suitable and unsuitable ones. When selecting, you should pay attention to learning from each other's strengths and weaknesses.
