Introduction to three-phase current transformer

Mar 04, 2024|

A three-phase current transformer is a device used to measure three-phase alternating current. It is one of the common and important instruments in the power system and is used to monitor and protect the current changes in the power system.
The main function of the three-phase current transformer is to convert the current of the high current sensor into a measurable low current for connection with measuring instruments or protective equipment. It usually consists of an iron core and multiple windings. The number of windings corresponds to the number of current phases.
The working principle of a transformer is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. When the current through the main winding (the high current winding) changes, a magnetic field is created in the core. This magnetic field will produce a secondary current through the secondary winding (low current winding), the size of the secondary current is proportional to the current in the primary winding.
By adjusting the winding ratio of the transformer, high current can be converted into low current. In this way, measuring instruments or protective devices can measure and operate using a smaller current range, thereby improving system safety and reliability.
Three-phase current transformers are commonly used for current measurement, protection and control in power systems. They are widely used in power plants, substations, distribution systems and industrial areas. The accuracy and reliability of transformers are crucial to the normal operation of the power system, so various factors such as load capacity, accuracy, and environmental adaptability need to be carefully considered when selecting and installing transformers.
