Overview of residual current transformers

Residual Current Transformers (RCT) are devices used to detect and measure residual current in power systems. Residual current is when the flow of current in a power system is unbalanced or bypasses its normal path, possibly due to ground faults, line shorts, or other faults.
The main purpose of RCT is to detect these residual currents and convert them into measurable signals. They usually consist of an iron core and windings connected to conductors in the electrical system. When there is residual current flowing through the system, it creates an induced current in the windings, which can be measured and monitored.
RCTs are often used to protect power systems and equipment so that timely measures can be taken in the event of ground faults or other current imbalances. They can be used in conjunction with equipment such as protective devices and circuit breakers to trigger protective action when abnormal current is detected, cutting off the circuit to prevent further damage or danger.
