What are the consequences of reversing the direction of a current transformer (CT)?

Reversed or negative display of electricity meter: When the current direction is reversed, the secondary current phase reverses by 180°, resulting in an incorrect direction of active power. The electricity meter may measure in reverse, leading to undercharging or overcharging.
Severe metering deviation: In a single-phase system, the electricity meter will rotate in reverse, changing the electricity consumption from accumulation to subtraction.
In a three-phase four-wire system, if the polarity of one phase CT is reversed, the electricity meter reading will only be 1/3 of the correct value, meaning 2/3 of the electricity consumption will be under-counted.
In a three-phase three-wire system, reversing any CT may cause the electricity meter to stop or reverse, depending on the load balance.
II. Impact on relay protection system
Differential protection malfunction: Differential protection relies on the consistency of current direction on both sides. If one CT is reversed, the differential current increases abnormally, which may be misjudged as an internal fault during normal operation, causing the high-voltage switch to trip and affecting the continuity of power supply. Directional protection failure: Such as directional overcurrent and zero-sequence directional protection, which rely on current phase to determine the fault direction. Reversed connection will cause the protection device to fail to operate or malfunction, failing to correctly isolate the fault.
Protection logic confusion: In new energy grid-connected systems, reversed CT connection often causes frequent tripping and inability to close circuits, seriously affecting the grid connection and power transmission progress.
III. Impact on measurement and monitoring systems
Abnormal current and power display: Measuring instruments display negative current or negative power, affecting operators' judgment of the system status.
Power factor calculation error: Current phase reversal leads to abnormal power factor display, which may be misjudged as insufficient or over-compensated reactive power compensation.
Three-phase imbalance alarm: Reversed single-phase CT connection will cause the current display of that phase to be reversed, causing the system to falsely report three-phase imbalance.
IV. Consequences under special wiring methods
Incomplete star connection (two-phase CT): If the polarity of one phase is reversed, the current in the unconnected middle phase will be √3 times higher than the other two phases, causing measurement distortion. If both phases are reversed, although the secondary current is still balanced, it will be 180° out of phase with the primary current, causing the electricity meter to reverse.
