What are the ways to determine the saturation point of a current transformer
Dec 03, 2022| The more direct way to determine is to carry the actual load on the secondary side, that is, to pass current to the current transformer from the primary side, and observe the secondary current to find the saturation point of the current transformer. However, since the saturation point of the protection-level current transformer may exceed 15 to 20 times the rated current, this test method is not suitable for use when the current transformer becomes relatively large.
In this regard, the saturation point of the current transformer can also be measured through the volt-ampere characteristic test, because the saturation of the current transformer is caused by the excessive magnetic flux density of its core. Therefore, as long as the primary side is open, the current is passed from the secondary side, and the voltage drop on the secondary side winding is measured, the saturation point of the current transformer can be detected.
