Does the overloaded current transformer need to be replaced immediately?

Aug 01, 2025|

1. Determine whether it needs to be replaced immediately
1. Check the cause of the overload
If the overload is caused by a temporary increase in load and the equipment is not obviously damaged, it can be solved by reducing the load first. For example, reduce the load of the equipment connected to the current transformer, or adjust the system operation mode to transfer part of the load to other equipment.
If the overload is caused by an internal fault in the equipment, such as insulation damage, winding short circuit, etc., the operation should be stopped immediately and the equipment should be replaced.
2. Check the status of the equipment
Check the appearance of the current transformer to see if there are any abnormal phenomena such as overheating, smoking, and odor. If these phenomena occur, it means that the equipment may be damaged and needs to be replaced immediately.
Use an infrared thermometer to detect the temperature of the equipment. If the temperature rises abnormally and exceeds the maximum operating temperature allowed by the equipment, consider replacing the equipment.
Check the insulation performance of the equipment. Through insulation resistance testing and other methods, if the insulation resistance value is found to be lower than the specified standard, it means that the insulation has aged or damaged and needs to be replaced.
2. Treatment measures
1. Reduce the load
After confirming the cause of the overload, if the equipment is not temporarily damaged, the load should be reduced to below the rated load as soon as possible, and the operation of the equipment should be continuously monitored.
2. Stop operation
If the equipment is damaged or there is a safety hazard, the equipment should be stopped immediately, the relevant power supply should be cut off to prevent the fault from expanding.
3. Replace the equipment
When it is confirmed that the equipment is damaged and cannot be repaired, a new current transformer should be replaced immediately. When replacing, the equipment with the same specifications, ratio, polarity, voltage level and qualified test should be selected.
3. Follow-up measures
1. Fault analysis
Inspect and analyze the damaged equipment in detail to find out the specific cause of the overload, such as excessive load, internal fault, insulation aging, etc., so as to take targeted preventive measures.
2. Preventive measures
Maintain and inspect the current transformer regularly, including appearance inspection, insulation test, temperature monitoring, etc., to find potential problems in time.
During design and installation, reasonably select the rated capacity of the equipment and reserve a certain margin to avoid long-term overload operation of the equipment.
Install overload protection devices, such as overcurrent relays, which can promptly sound an alarm or cut off power supply when the equipment is overloaded.
