How to choose a current transformer with the right accuracy level?

Aug 03, 2024|

1. Measurement or protection requirements
If it is used for high-precision measurements such as energy metering, a current transformer of level 0.2 or 0.5 should be selected.
For general measurement purposes, level 1 accuracy may be sufficient.
If it is used as a protection device for power systems, level 3 accuracy is usually sufficient.
2. System rated current
Make sure that the rated primary current of the selected current transformer covers the maximum operating current that may occur in the system, while considering appropriate overload capacity.
3. Load characteristics
Understand the size and nature of the secondary load, such as resistive, inductive or capacitive load, and the power factor of the load. Excessive load may affect accuracy, and a suitable transformer needs to be selected to adapt.
4. Cost and budget
The higher the accuracy level, the higher the cost. On the premise of meeting the measurement or protection requirements, the selection should be based on the budget.
5. Environmental conditions
Consider factors such as temperature, humidity, and magnetic field interference in the installation environment. In harsh environments, it may be necessary to select a transformer with higher accuracy or special protection performance.
6. Long-term stability and reliability
Choose products with reliable quality and good stability to reduce the risk of accuracy drift and failure in long-term operation.
7. Standards and specifications requirements
Some industries or applications may have specific standards and specifications that specify the accuracy level that must be adopted.
